Some of the orthodontic treatments used by dental professionals for straightening teeth include traditional braces and Invisalign. These procedures are also designed to give patients an appealing smile and promote better oral health.
Characteristics of braces and Invisalign
Braces are metal brackets that are glued on to the patients’ teeth and then tied together using wires and tiny rubber bands. Today, patients can get brackets that closely resemble their enamel color to make them more discrete, or for fashion purposes.
Dentist started using Invisalign back in 2000. They were designed to be practically invisible. They consist of aligner trays that are smooth, comfortable, and BPA free clear plastic, which are worn over the teeth to subtly and gently move them into position. A dentist will use impressions, pictures, and X-rays to create a detailed 3-D image of your teeth, which he or she will use to configure your aligner trays.
Advantages of Invisalign and Traditional Braces
Traditional braces are designed to be more effective for those with serious dental issues. This means that they can sort out more complex issues depending on the patient.
Traditional braces come with fewer maintenance requirements. This is mainly because the patients do not face the temptation of taking them out; meaning less self-discipline is needed for success. In addition, there are no extra cleaning steps required apart from regular brushing and flossing.
One of the main reasons why most people don’t like traditional braces is their terrible appearance. The truth is that children who wear such braces are more often than not subjected to ridicule from their peers. They can even end up becoming social outcasts who are repeatedly made fun of. With Invisalign, all these can be avoided. These braces are not as visible as their metal counterparts. A person would have to be standing right next to you, to know that you are you are wearing them.
Can be easily removed
Traditional braces can only be removed after the prescribed treatment is over. On top of that, only a dentist can do it. Invisalign braces are totally different. The dentist uses custom molds of your teeth to create Invisalign trays so that they perfectly fit your teeth. You only need to wear a set of straighteners for around 2 weeks, after which, you can dispose of them and move on to the next set. The good thing is that your teeth will gradually be straightened without the use of painful tightening sessions, which is the case with traditional metal braces. You can also remove them whenever you want, and it only takes a few seconds.
You can eat whatever you like
In most cases, people are forced to change their diet once they get their metal braces fixed. The main reason behind this is to prevent food from getting stuck in between the braces. However, with Invisalign, you can eat any type of food during the straightening process. This is because you can easily remove the tray before sitting down for a meal.
Straightening your teeth for a better smile and improved oral health is not something that should be taken lightly. As a result, you should consult a dentist before deciding on which kind of braces to get for you or your child.
